This year we have helped people on 738 occasions between our Town Centre location (698) and our Mobile Team (40). Overall, this brings the total number since opening (June 2014) to 7027.

Of course, behind any set of statistics there are real people with very personal stories. That is why we take confidentiality extremely seriously – it is vital that those who seek our help know that whatever is discussed stays in Cornerstone unless they (as the client) wish us to involve others. Unfortunately, it is this need for confidentiality that prevents sharing some of the more heartwarming and inspirational examples of our work. Suffice to say that the degree of need has varied enormously; from helping to fill in complex forms and accessing online information, to being homeless and sleeping rough. The latter is difficult to deal with, since there is a critical shortage of council-controlled (housing association) accommodation for single people below state pension age.  We anticipate that the forthcoming changes in the law in respect of private letting will further reduce the low-cost letting stock.  Nevertheless, we have helped a number of people find permanent homes. If nothing else, Cornerstone has provided a place where people can share their problems over a free hot drink in a friendly, totally non-judgmental environment.

For those who cannot visit our main office (the very elderly or disabled) we have the mobile service, whereby on request our volunteers attend a client’s home. For instance, to help complete a benefit application form (which can take hours). The mobile team has also attended benefit appeal and health assessment hearings as the client’s advocate.

We operate with a fantastic team of volunteers who give up their time freely because they have a heart for helping others. We also rely on voluntary donations to pay our overheads. So, whether in terms of time or money, we pray that as you read this you will be rewarded by the joy that comes from helping others – we are always looking for Volunteers!
